Fifth Basic Plan for the Development of Inter-Korean Relations (2026–2030) reviewed — direction for mutually beneficial exchange and cooperation
On 19 March the Ministry of Unification held the first meeting of the Inter-Korean Relations Development Committee of 2026 and reviewed the draft Fifth Basic Plan for the Development of Inter-Korean Relations (2026–2030). The plan sets the direction of inter-Korean relations for the next five years; once it has been confirmed, through the State Council and other steps, it will be reported to the National Assembly and published.
The six directions set out in the draft
- Placing inter-Korean relations on a new footing of reconciliation and cooperation, and giving peaceful coexistence an institutional basis
- Working towards a resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue and progress on a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula
- Pursuing mutually beneficial inter-Korean exchange and cooperation with public support behind it
- Easing the hardship caused by division and resolving humanitarian issues
- Preparing for a peace economy and shared prosperity on the Korean Peninsula
- Encouraging public participation and international cooperation to build a shared understanding of peace and unification

- The third direction, mutually beneficial exchange and cooperation, bears directly on projects at the private level. Detailed tasks by field will be published once the plan is confirmed, so working out which task your project falls under will help with a fund application and with preparing for approval.
